One year ago, we turned the page, and Erik went ahead of us to Vermont. I, avoiding the issue entirely, jumped on a Greyhound and went the other direction, to my sister in South Dakota. Good thing our kids have loving grandparents and a place to be that feels like home up at the farm.
One year ago my #2 sister turned thirty. We reunited, drank wine, cuddled her baby, went out on the town with her husband, and hid from the world and reality.
Today my reality is surrounded by the beautiful green spring views of the hills, the activities of motherhood, drinking coffee for the sake of prolonging conversation and enjoyment, and getting acquainted with my own company.
Our change has happened, our peace has come. And loneliness is still here. But I have the birds, and the trees, my daily prayers, and the children. That is more than enough for Mary Oliver, isn’t it?
